Review

“…a unique collection of rare and beautiful birds in the world. More importantly, this book is packed with knowledge about birds. This beautifully manufactured book is one of the best coffee table books published in 2018. If you care about life on Earth, you can show your love and respect to life by adding this to your living area – on the shelf or on the coffee table.
–The Washington Book Review

As a bird lover I was really looking forward to this book. I received it today and I''m so disappointed by the way it was printed. This book has beautiful photographs that are ruined by the binding. These photos were obviously not taken to be spread across two pages. I have posted pictures of several examples and there are many more in the book. Even if you try to press the book flat (which is not possible) you still can''t see the full photo. This is not a large book and it should have been printed in a larger format so the beautiful photos are not marred by the fold of the binding. Terribly disappointing. I expected better from National Geographic. The two stars are only because the photos I can see are nice but the printing deserves zero stars.

If you love birds, or need a gift for someone who does, this is it. The photography of single and well as multiple birds are just stunning and I''m honestly not quite sure how they managed some of those shots, some very talented photographers and some super cooperative birds! it The layouts and graphics are as gorgeous as the photos and the book delivers everything the pretty cover promises.

Tip: To ensure your book arrives in great shape with an undamaged cover and dust jacket, order it separately. Books shipped separately are sent in padded envelopes and look great when they arrive. When they are boxed up with other items the corners get bumped and the dust jackets get small tears and marks.

We are so lucky that Joel Sartore is sharing his mission of photographing animals and birds before they go extinct with these stunning photographs. What makes his photographs so great is the personality he captures of his subjects. That is not an easy task to do with a photograph as those who have tried to capture the personality of their pets in a photograph will attest as animals do not pose. My personal favorites are the whimsical Great Grey Owl, the Oriental Stork that seems to be grinning at the camera, and the cuteness and pair bond of the Crested Auklet?

I bought two copies of this book - one for my wife''s classroom of third graders as she is a teacher. I hope that the magic of some of Sartore''s pictures will inspire kids in the classroom.

Hopefully, some of his photographs and books can make a difference for preserving these amazing animals with is the author''s goal.

Its not too late to protect many of these animals!

Amazing Birds of Such Color

I''m glad that I bought this separate book of the Photo Ark. Many of these birds are so beautiful and I had never seen them in such detail. I do wish that some of the pictures were not spread over two pages.

A Wonderful Book.

I read everything Aviary I can get my hands on. Their intelligence never ceases to amaze me. But how we bear witness to these unique beauties, pressed up against pure white and black is sui generis, fine stuff. Thank you.

Absolutely stunning. Purchased this book because it appeared to include a variety of birds, and was hoping it included marabou stork photos. While it didn''t specifically have the marabou, it did have a section on scavenger birds (and other birds that don''t usually get much attention -- including the wood stork). The span of birds covered is impressive (even better than expected) and the photos have a certain dignity to them. The information is concise and relevant. Appropriate for adults and children, makes me wish I had a coffee table -- and, to a lesser extent, friends to read my coffee table book.

The world''s birds are threatened like never before in history due to pollution, loss of habitat and other human actions - direct and indirect - that have reduced populations of thousands of species. Yet, ask most people about species becoming extinct and they''re more likely to talk about rhinos or elephants. Noah Strycker and Joel Sartore have teamed up to photograph and write about 300 bird species in stunning, detailed color and heartfelt, fascinating prose that showcases the role each plays in nature. What happens when we who have so much power keep destroying strands from the web of life, like birds? Do we really want to find out? Or can we appreciate their place in nature?

It''s also helpful to point out that the quality of this book''s paper really stands out. If you want to appreciate these birds for their beauty as well as everything else, this book shows it well.

Beautiful photos ruined by very poor binding. Photos spread over 2 pages are impossible to see as a whole. So disappointed. Single page photos should have been adapted to fit a wide format book, thereby showing the full glory of the pictures now crammed, unsuccessfully, across two facing pages. Twice the price maybe, but personally, I''d have bought several copies, as I did with Photo Ark. If I was reviewing the material I''d say 5 stars. National Geographic none.
